I somras avslöjade Zlatan Ibrahimovic att han avslutar fotbollskarriären som spelare, 41 år gammal. I en ny intervju med Piers Morgan öppnar nu Zlatan upp om livet efter karriären, privatlivet, att han friat till sin partner Helena Seger, den frostiga relationen med Pep Guardiola, saknaden efter avlidne agenten och vännen Mino Raiola, samt sin syn på tidigare klubben Manchester Uniteds tuffa situation. I intervjun berättar Zlatan att han kunde ha fortsatt spela med stor smärta och risk för skador:
“I just retired three months ago. And I agree with you that if I wanted it or not, is different, but I accepted it. Because in the end, I was not feeling good. I could have continued. I could have continued suffering in a physical way and keep going. But I wanted to feel good. And I didn’t want to have a consequence after my career where I’m limping or I cannot do things with my boys.”
Trots detta tycks Zlatan uppleva att han kunde ha uträttat mer på fotbollsplanen:
“So I chose to stop and I think I stopped in the right moment. But to be honest with you, when I see all the other strikers out there, I could still play because I will do much more than that. I’m better than and there’s not for my ego. I could give you many names. Probably 95% of them are out there.”
I en annan del av intervjun avslöjar Zlatan även att han haft massiva bud från både Kina och Saudiarabien, lukrativa bud han valde bort för att premiera den sportsliga utmaningen:
“I had an offer also from China. I had an offer also from Saudi, but the situation is, what do you want? What objectives do you have? I said before we started, like certain players need to finish their career on the big stage because that is the high end of your career.”
På frågan hur han ser på Cristiano Ronaldos flytt konkluderar Zlatan med en känga mot portugisen:
“You have to be remembered for talent, not for what you earned.”
Zlatan utvecklar resonemanget vidare:
“Because if you were remembered in the opposite way, what we are training every day for, what we are being recognised for, is our talent and that’s what you want to be remembered for. So I think certain players that reach a certain level, they have to stop at a certain stage, and that’s the big stage. You cannot go in a lower stage and finish your career in a different way. But some players needed the situations where you can earn a lot of money because they didn’t earn enough.”
Under intervjun fick Zlatan även frågan om hur mycket pengar han själv tjänat under karriären. Efter några undfallande svar säger Zlatan slutligen att han har en förmögenhet på ungefär en halv miljard dollar, cirka fem miljarder svenska kronor. Expressen citerar från intervjun på svenska:
“Ju mer pengar man har desto mer stress får man. Jag har varit på båda sidor. Jag har varit utan pengar och vuxit upp i en familj där pappa tjänar 10 000 kronor i månaden. Han gav mig pengar när jag behövde det. Men jag hade det bra då. Jag är lycklig nu, men om tio minuter kan jag vara olycklig. Pengar gör livet enklare men det innebär inte lycka.”
