Efter att ny obduktion pekar på mord.
I slutet av förra veckan stod det klart att Derek Chauvin, polisen som satt med sitt knä över George Floyd hals i nästan nio minuter, har gripits misstänkt för mord och dråp. Nu menar Floyds familjeadvokat, Ben Crump, att resterande tre poliser involverade i gripandet av Floyd, som senare ledde till hans död, också kommer att åtalas.
“We heard that they expect to charge those officers…We understand they will be charged. That is what the family is hearing from the authorities and [Floyd] died on the scene and that’s important to note”, sa Crump till “Today Show” igår tisdag.
Detta efter att ny, oberoende obduktion visat att George Floyd de facto kvävdes till döds och inte på grund av hjärtstopp orsakat av hälsoproblem som den länets tidigare obduktion fastställt. Den oberoende obduktionen, beställd av Floyds familj, menade istället att hans hälsa var bra och att dödsorsaken var “homicide caused by asphyxia due to neck and back compression that led to a lack of blood flow to the brain.”
Detta är förstås en extremt viktig detalj i den framtida utvecklingen av fallet och Crump tillägger att han även förväntar sig att åtalen mot Derek Chauvin kommer att uppgraderas till mord av första graden.
“I think it’s very likely the charges are going to be upgraded…Why is it when a white police kills a black person in America, we act like it’s such a difficult thing to charge them with what we would be charged with?”, frågar han i sändningen.
Chauvin greps tidigare misstänkt för mord av tredje graden och dråp av andra graden.
Under tisdagen gjorde även mamman till George Floyds barn, Roxie Washington, sitt första uttalande i form av ett känslosamt tal i Minneapolis City Hall.
“I don’t have a lot to say, because I can’t get my words together right now. But I wanted everybody to know that this is what those officers took. At the end of the day, they get to go home and be with their families. Gianna does not have a father”, sa hon och fortsatte:
“He will never see her grow up, graduate. He will never walk her down the aisle. If there’s a problem she’s having and she needs her dad, she does not have that anymore. I’m here for my baby, and I’m here for George because I want justice for him. I want justice for him ’cause he was good. No matter what anybody thinks, he was good. And this is the proof he was a good man.”
