Den populära programledaren och komikern Trevor Noah har tröttnat på kritiken mot drillrap. I “The Daily Show”-segmentet “If You Don’t Know, Now You Know” utbildar han nu sina tittare och riktar kritik mot de personer som menar att musiken leder till våld. Nyligen utlovade bland annat New Yorks borgmästare Eric Adams att han skulle förbjuda drillrap och menade att det bidrog till vapenvåldet i staden som nyligen ledde till två rappares död.
Noah kritiserade dock förslaget och menade att argumenten går tillbaka långt i tiden.
“You can totally understand where all of these people are coming from. They feel like the rap is making the street more dangerous, but don’t forget, don’t forget this is an argument that we’ve heard about rap music for decades”, säger han bland annat.
“…back in the 90s people were saying all the same things that they’re saying about rap music now about drill rap music and you’ll find in another 30 years they’ll be saying the same thing about whatever rap is then.”
Han fortsätter:
“A lot of people that think drill rap is the cause of this violence don’t realize that if you ask people in the drill rap community they say no it’s not the cause of the violence, it’s actually the other way around.”
“The Daily Show”-värden menade också att de flesta av drillrapparna bara rappar om deras verklighet – en verklighet med förutsättningar som är allt annat än optimala.
“From their perspective, people upset about violence from rap music are focusing on the symptom instead of the root cause. Because you wanna ban drill rap, but you don’t wanna ban income inequality. You wanna ban drill rap, but you don’t wanna ban mass incarceration. You wanna ban drill rap, but you don’t wanna ban failing schools. You wanna ban drill rap, but you don’t want to ban the things that lead to drill rap.”
Segmentet kommer efter att rappare som Fivio Foreign, Maino och andra New York-drillrappare fick till ett möte med borgmästaren Adams efter hans uttalande. Ett möte som enligt en nyhetsinslag (se nedan) ska ha lett till en reform som kommer presenteras inom kort.
“It’s been a lot of talk about drill rap, drill music in New York City, connecting violence with the culture, and I just wanted to create a conversation with the mayor”, säger den rutinerade Brooklyn-rapparen Maino i ett klipp från mötet.
“We brought Fivio here, we got young B-Lovee here, Slow and Bucks here, we got Bleezy here to talk about what’s really happening so the mayor could get a real perspective and real understanding of what drill rap is and so we could have some real dialogue and really make things happen.”
Debatten är förstås bekant överlag, men även i närtid då gangsterrap diskuterats flitigt i Sverige efter Einárs tragiska bortgång i fjol. Även här diskuteras huruvida musiken leder till våld och upptrappningar av konflikter, medan många också pekar på att musiken endast är symtom på segregation och klasskillnader.
