Scarface och Rakim prisade med miljonbelopp på Hip-Hop Grandmaster Awards under helgen

Under helgen fick två av hiphopkulturens stora rapikoner ta emot hyllningar och prispengar på den nyinstiftade Hip-Hop Grandmaster Awards. Under hösten presenterades de första två pristagarna; Rakim och Scarface från gruppen Geto Boys. Båda tilldelas en summa om 500.000 dollar var, för sina insatser inom hiphopkulturen.

Bakom arrangemanget står stiftelsen Paid In Full Foundation, instiftad av bland andra Quincy “QD3” Jones III, Steve Stoute, Fab 5 Freddy samt Ben och Felicia Horowitz. Syftet är att ge tillbaka till kulturens pionjärer och stöttepelare. På stiftelsens hemsida framgår:

“Unfortunately, many of the most impactful original artists never received recognition proportional with their exceptional contributions to arts and culture. The Paid in Full Foundation aims to rectify that through its grantmaking program, by both honoring the people who built Hip Hop and enabling them to pursue their creative and intellectual pursuits for the benefit of society.”

Ben Horowitz uttalade sig tidigare i höst om möjligheten att prisa kulturens ikoner:

“We created the Paid in Full Foundation to honor foundational Hip-Hop artists who made colossal contributions to the art form and society as a whole. In addition, the foundation aims to enable these legendary heroes to continue sharing their brilliance with the world.”

Under den gångna helgen hölls prisutdelningen till Rakim och Scarface i Las Vegas där många kända hiphop-profiler fanns på plats, inklusive pristagarna själva. Från scenen hyllades de två pristagarna av Nas – en av frontfigurerna för HIPHOP50-firandet under 2023. På scen återgav Nas en ikonisk vers av Rakim och sade:

“That verse — that song, ‘Paid In Full’ – ‘I can think it. Because of you, my brother, I made it. Because of Doug E. Fresh, Flavor Flav, I gotta shout out all my heroes.”

Han vände sig därefter till Scarface:

“Because of y’all, I made it. And I’m forever in debt to y’all.”

Rakim kommer även till Sverige och Danmark under försommaren 2024, med spelningar inbokade i Stockholm, Göteborg och Köpenhamn i slutet av maj månad. Läs mer här!
