Under Nas historiska, första spelning på Madison Square Garden passade han på att skicka med en hyllning till David “Trugoy the Dove” Jolicoeur som avled tidigare i februari. Mitt i sitt 34-låtar långa konsertset spelade Nas den första versen från De La Souls klassiska singel “Buddy” och ropade:
“Make some noise for Trugoy, De La Soul. Rest in poetry!”
David Jolicoeurs dödsbesked kom bara ett par veckor innan gruppens album skulle släppas på alla streamingplattformar efter en utdragen tvist med skivbolaget Tommy Boy Records. De La Soul-medlemmen Posdnuos hyllade honom under förra veckan med ett öppet brev som avlutades med att tacka David Jolicoeur för musiken och vänskapen:
“We would like to say thank you Dave for being a big brother. Thank you for being a friend. Thank you for the wise words placed in your verses. Thank you for the music you produced that is loved by so many. Thank you for never wanting to compromise the quality of our brand. Thank you for helping us become a group that will remain etched in the timeline of hip hop culture as well as the fabric of music and for now on when we perform “Ring Ring Ring Ha Ha Hey” we will say “2-2-2-2-222 we got an angel in heaven who can talk to you”
Nas annonserade först sin konsert på Madison Square Garden som en “King’s Disease triology concert” där han skulle bjuda på musik från de tre Hit-Boy-producerade albumen. Men publiken bjöds i stället på en hyllning till den 49-årige Queensrapparens hela diskografi – med hits som “The World Is Yours”, “If I Ruled The World” och “N.Y. State of Mind”. Nas gästades också på scen av en annan New York-legend, nämligen Mary J. Blige. Han plockade dessutom upp AZ för ett gemensamt framförande av “Life’s a Bitch” och Slick Rick som dök upp på “Hey Young World”.
