Missy Elliott skrev historia under helgen då hon i fredags blev den första kvinnliga rapparen att väljas in i Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Men hon lade stor vikt vid att de är artisterna före henne som förtjänar mest respekt.
När “Get Your Freak On”-rapparen valdes in av kollegan Queen Latifah höll hon ett tacktal där hon valde att hylla namn som Pepa från Salt-N-Pepa, MC Lyte, Roxanne Shante, Monie Love och förstås Queen Latifah själv.
“We all love music in some form, and all of those people who have already been up on the stage. I was just listening to other people’s stories and being like, wow, they’ve been around all of these years… And that’s why I’m still in shock, because they have so many years on me.”
Hon fortsatte:
“I have to say Pepa who is here from Salt and Pepa. Her and Queen Latifah, [MC] Lyte, Roxane Shante, so many. Monie [Love], all those ones before me gave me their shoulders to stand on. So I just wanna take the time. My people say, ‘Hey, go up there, and people wanna hear from you, how you feel.’ But these are the people who inspired me. And if it wasn’t for them and their music, I probably wouldn’t be standing here.”
En annan som förärades med en plats i finrummet var hiphop-pionjären DJ Kool Herc. Under ceremonin gjorde han sällskap med sin syster, Cindy Campbell, och LL Cool J som agerad värd. I sitt tal uppmärksammade LL det faktum att hela genren startade med att Herc, vars riktiga namn är Clive Campbell, berömt anordnade en födelsedagsfest för Cindy den 11 augusti 1973.
“Soon, all of New York City knew him as DJ Kool Herc. Herc had learned about the dancehall music and toasting he heard in his native country of Jamaica. He moved to the Bronx with his family when he was 12 and he molded it into a new form of music that evolved into a street culture—DJing, rapping or MCing, b-boying, better known as breakdancing, writing, better known as graffiti—Herc has his hand in every area of hip-hop”, sa LL Cool J i talet och tillade:
“It’s a culture that changed my life, obviously. It changed the lives of millions and millions of people.”
På väg mot scenen fick Herc tårar i ögonen och väl uppe valde att han hylla sina föräldrar såväl som svarta musikikoner som James Brown och Harry Belafonte.
