Albumaktuella LL Cool J har de senaste veckorna gjort den sedvanliga pr-rundan inför sitt kommande album “The FORCE”. Med tanke på rapikonens långa och framgångsrika karriär är det naturligt att mycket har handlat om tillbakablickar och nostalgi, varpå vi fått några intressanta citat.
Nu har han bland annat avslöjat vem som varit hans svåraste motståndare i karriären, när det kommer till beef. Rapparen har som bekant fejdat med namn som Kool Moe Dee, MC Shan, MC Hammer och Ice-T – men ingen av dem har kunnat mäta sig med Canibus, enligt LL.
“I would say out of all them, probably Canibus because he was a pain in the ass. I was a little more disconnected so it made it way more difficult. It’s like one of them Rocky movies when he’s driving through the tunnel with the fucking Rolls-Royce and he’s having flashbacks and shit, you got this Mr. T muthafucka over here rapping out the basement. That was the vibe”, säger han i en intervju med Ray Daniels.
“He’s rapping in my ears, biting at my calf muscles, over here doing sitcoms and shit. I’m like, ‘Yo, this shit is crazy right now!’ This muthafucka fucking with me, bothering me in the middle of the night. Our culture is crazy ’cause they won’t leave you alone about this shit. ‘What you gonna do about your man?’ You just gotta deal with this shit, right? So I would say Canibus.”
Beefen uppstod som bekant i slutet av 90-talet, när Canibus till synes svingade mot LL Cool J på låten “4,3,2,1” där även Redman, Method Man och DMX medverkade.
“Yo Method, where the gods at? Redman, where the Squad at? / Yo L, is that a mic on your arm? Let me borrow that”, rappade han på originalversionen av låten med referens till LL:s bicepstatuering.
LL Cool J tolkade raden som respektlös varpå Canibus fick ändra sin vers, men i en slug maktdemonstration lämnade han sitt eget svar på låten.
“When young sons fantasize of borrowing flows / Tell little shorty with the big mouth the bank is closed / The symbol on my arm is off limits to challengers / You hold the rusty swords, I swing the Excalibur”, varnade Queens-rapparen på låten och fortsatte med raderna:
“Now let’s get back to this mic on my arm / If it ever left my side, it’d transform into a time bomb / You don’t wanna borrow that, you wanna idolize / And you don’t wanna make me mad, n-gga, you wanna socialize”
Med detta var fejden ett faktum och Canibus svarade sedan med den ikoniska disslåten “Second Round K.O.”, som är vida ansedd som en av de bästa någonsin. Sedan följde låtar som “The Ripper Strikes Back”, “Back Where I Belong” och “Rip the Jacker”.
En mer mogen LL Cool J har i efterhand erkänt att det var hans fel att beefen startade. I fjol gästade han “Million Dollaz Worth of Game” och sa:
“With [Canibus], I think it was more my fault because I could have addressed him a little differently. He wanted to get a tattoo like mine. I could have said, ‘Good luck with that,’ but I didn’t understand that path at that time.”
Nästan 20 år senare begravde rapparna stridsyxan när de delade scen under en julkonsert i Brooklyn 2014.
Vad gäller LL Cool J:s nya musik så släppte han nyligen musikvideon till Saweetie-samarbetet “Proclivities” inför albumet “The FORCE” som släpps den 6 september 2024. Den första singeln var “Saturday Night Special” med Rick Ross och Fat Joe.
