I samband med utställningen av Jay-Z:s texter med “Book of HOV” på Brooklyn Public Library i höstas, gjorde CBS-journalisten Gayle King en längre intervju med rapmogulen. Inför att två delar av intervjun ska sändas på torsdagen och fredagen så har flera utdrag nu läckt från intervjun. Jay-Z får bland annat frågan om han spelar in ny musik i studion för tillfället och svarade:
“I’ll say I want to make music, but it has to be something important…I don’t want to make just a bunch of tunes. That’s not going to serve me and it won’t feed me, first of all.”
På frågan om han pensionerat sig från rap svarar HOV:
“No, I already did that. I can’t do that again…”
I andra klipp från intervjun som uppmärksammats kommenterar Jay-Z den flitigt ställda frågan; 500.000 dollar eller en middag med Jay-Z? Vad väljer du? Rapparen själv svarar att hans “visdom” finns att spåra i den musik han släppt genom årens lopp och svarar:
“You’ve gotta take the money. You’ve got all that in the music for $10.99… I wouldn’t tell you to cut a bad deal. Like, take the $500,000, go buy some albums, and listen to the albums. It’s all there. If you piece it together and really listen to the music for the words, well, what it is, it’s all there.”
Han kommenterar också smeknamnet “One take Hov” i intervjun och säger:
“This was when you were recording to actual tape. So, you can’t mess up, ‘cause then you got to go all the way back and cut the tape. That’s where the whole ‘One-Take HOV’ came from. Because if you wanted a fly chorus on this thing, you had to go to dinner. It took an engineer hours to cut the tape… fly it over here… So I start learning my lyrics really good so I could do them one time—you understand—straight down, and I didn’t waste time.”
