I onsdags kom nyheten om att Jay-Z och Roc Nation ingått ett partnerskap med amerikanska fotbollsligan NFL, där han ska agera “live music entertainment strategist”, samt att aktivt jobba med social rättvisa för “Inspire Change”-initiativet”, som skapades efter kontroverserna kring Colin Kaepernick och hans knäböjning. Många har dock reagerat negativt på faktumet att Hov gjort en deal med den liga som gjort det svårt för Kaepernick att få spela efter hans protest för tre år sedan. En är fotbollsspelarens flickvän tillika radiopersonligheten Nessa:
“I don’t mind you doing a business deal – but I do mind you wrapping it in social justice when you’re working with an organization that denies someone an opportunity”, och utvecklade sedan: “It’s typical for the NFL to buy different PR looks to cover up their dirt – that’s nothing new. But what is disgusting and disappointing is Jay-Z let them use him.”
Hon har också påstått att Jay-Z aldrig pratade med Kaepernick innan partnerskapet trädde i kraft, något Jay själv sagt.
Det ska också ha kommit fram att Jay-Z sagt till Jermaine Dupri att tacka nej till en liknande deal häromåret. Det är Bryan Michael Cox, en Grammy-vinnande låtskrivare och nära vän till Dupri, som berättar att Jay ska ha ringt Dupri och rådgivit honom att tacka nej till en deal där den senare hjälpte NFL att sätta upp gratisshower i Atlanta inför Super Bowl 53.
“I’m not saying that it can’t turn into some good shit. We’re also talking about a guy who single-handedly picked up the phone and called Jermaine to tell him not to do it…. When we all had that meeting with the NFL, all that shit was part of the same shit.
I’m not gonna condemn it and be like, ‘That shit’s wack. For me, I want to look at it intelligently because I know a lot of what was happening before and how we were engaged last year as a community…. At the end of the day, [Dupri] took a beating for doing the same shit. And I guarantee you they didn’t pay him as much as they’re about to pay [JAY].”
Samma kväll som dealen offentliggjordes delade J. Cole med sig av ett klipp till stöd för Kaepernick med texten: “Thank you @Kaepernick7 we ain’t forgot. @nfl let the man work”, med beskrivningen i videon: “As a tribute to the work Kaepernick has done for the issue of racism and police brutality.

Ytterligare kritik har kommit efter att det även spekulerats i att Hov siktar på att bli delägare i ett av ligans lag, bland annat från Kaepernicks forne kollega Eric Reid:
“JAY-Z claimed to be a supporter of Colin. Wore his jersey. Told people not perform at the super bowl because of the treatment that the NFL did to Colin and now he’s going to be a part owner. It’s kind of despicable”, säger han iklädd en “I’m With Kap”-tröja.
På frågan om han anser Jay-Z vara en sell out, svarar han att han är på väg att bli det.
“If Jay-Z is gonna be an owner, is Colin gonna be signed the day he becomes the owner of a team? We’ll see. I think he has a very small window with an ownership position to make a move to get Colin on the field, whatever team he’s on.”

En som dock verkar tro på Jay-Z och hans förmåga att åstadkomma förändring, och kanske till och med få Colin Kaepernick återanställd i NFL, är Cardi B. “I feel like JAY-Z could bring back Colin Kaepernick. I feel so. I feel like he has that power”, säger hon till TMZ, som också pratat med en lika stöttande DJ Khaled.
“Nah, I haven’t talked to him about that, but shout out to JAY-Z and everything he’s doing. He’s always showing love, and always uplifting the people, and always moving the culture forward. So, shout out to Jigga. Shout out to—you know what I’m saying—everything that he’s doing”, säger han.
