Under natten hölls American Music Awards 2021 i Microsoft Theater i Los Angeles. Inför galan ledde pop-sensationen Olivia Rodrigo med sju nomineringar, varpå The Weeknd följde tätt efter med sex. I täten återfanns också Giveon, Bad Bunny och Doja Cat med fem nomineringar var.
De två sistnämnda uppträdde också under galan, tillsammans med namn som Silk Sonic, Tyler, the Creator och New Edition. Cardi B agerade värd för galan, där hon även tog hem pris för Favorite Hip-Hip Song med “Up”.
