I dagarna gjorde Snoop Dogg en intervju med TIDALs innehållsansvarige Elliott Wilson, där de täckte allt ifrån Death Row Records, halvtidsshowen i Super Bowl LVI och en rad andra ämnen. Under samtal påstod Snoop att han förvärvat rättigheterna till Dr. Dres solodebut “The Chronic”, såväl som en rad andra Death Row-klassiker. Nu tillbakavisar dock Dr. Dres advokat uppgifterna. I ett uttalande som Complex tagit del av försäkrar Howard King att Dre äger 100% av “The Chronic”.

“There are false reports out regarding ownership by Death Row of Dr. Dre’s The Chronic. Dr. Dre owns 100 percent of The Chronic”, skriver King.

Det var i februari som Snoop Dogg köpte upp Death Row Records, varpå det praktiskt taget togs för givet att han skulle ha kontroll över hela bolagets katalog utöver 2Pacs album som hans eftermäle äger.

“To be in control of the brand means that I got all of the pieces that I need to do what I got to do, from the masters to the publishing, to the IP, to the label, to the logo, to everything. It’s all mine. I’m able to move it around and do what I need to do with it. As far as 2Pac’s masters, 2Pac’s masters came back to him last year”, säger Snoop till Elliott Wilson innan han målar upp en helt annan bild än King och även yttrar förhoppningar om 2Pacs katalog.

“But I got a great relationship with his estate, and I’m pretty sure we’re going to be able to work something out … to continue some Death Row 2Pac business now that Snoop Dogg is in control of Death Row. Same with Dr. Dre and The Chronic. I got The Chronic album. I got Doggystyle, Tha Doggfather, Murder Was the Case, Dogg Food, Above the Rim. I got all those records.”

Enligt Billboard ska “The Chronic” återgå till Dres ägo 2023, vilket skulle kunna innebär att Snoop har en lucka att förhandla, “even if it’s only through a distribution deal.”
