“I was absolutely concerned about that.”
Dr. Dre har avslöjat att han var nära på att dra sig ur Super Bowl LVI, innan han blev övertalad av Jay-Z och Nas.
I en ny intervju med fitness-entreprenören Dolvet Quinces podcast “Workout the Doubt” berättar hiphopmogulen att han var ambivalent inför sin medverkan i halvtidsshowen och var rädd för att ses som en “sellout”. Förmodligen på grund av den kritik NFL tidigare fått för hanterandet av Colin Kaepernick.
Men Jay-Z och Nas ska ha övertygat honom om att det var rätt beslut att genomföra showen.
“I was absolutely concerned about that. I actually called a couple of close friends and said, ‘Listen, I’m gonna pull out. I’m not gonna do the show. Because I don’t know if I want that smoke. I don’t know if I want the backlash after doing the show and potentially looking like a fucking sellout or something like that.’
I got on the phone with Nas. He called me up and was like, ‘Yo bro’ — you know, Nas has that voice — ‘Yo bro, you gotta do it. You gotta do this. It’s gonna be so powerful for fucking Hip Hop, for the culture, for you, for L.A. and the whole nine’”, säger han med en relativt imponerande imitation av Nas röst. Han fortsätter:
“We were on the phone for like 10 minutes and he talked me into doing it. Nas and JAY-Z were big reasons why I decided to do the show.”

Dr. Dre genomförde som bekant showen tillsammans med Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige, 50 Cent och Anderson .Paak på Inglewood SoFi Stadium i februari. Tillsammans stod de för halvtidsshowen då Los Angeles Rams kröntes mästare efter en 32-30 vinst mot Cincinnati Bengals.
Publiken fick se och höra klassiker som “The Next Episode”, “Still D.R.E.” och 2Pacs “California Love”. Uppträdandet belönades med fem nomineringar till Primetime Emmy Awards 2022.
Tidigare i år avslöjade Snoop att Jay-Z också ställde ett ultimatum till NFL, där han hotade med att avgå från sin roll som musikstrateg om Dr. Dre och gänget inte fick uppträda. Något som det spekulerats i att det fanns visst motstånd kring.
“We love each other. Like, not secretly, like publicly, we love each other. It is what it is, so it’s like for him to go to bat for us and tell the NFL, ‘Fuck that. They perform or I quit,’ that was the most gangster shit out of everything. Then with attire and kneeling and all this … you can’t wear your gang bang shit? JAY-Z hit me like, ‘Wear what the fuck you want to wear. Peace to the Gods’”, sa han till TIDAL i mars.
Eminem i sin tur vägrade uppträda om inte 50 Cent fick hänga på. Detta uppgav N.O.R.E. i våras.
