Sedan tjugo år tillbaka har den amerikanska kongressens bibliotek sparat utvalda musikinspelningar för framtiden, som är “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant, and/or inform or reflect life in the United States.”. Genom årens lopp har hundratals inspelningar av olika slag valts ut – däribland Nas debutklassiker “Illmatic” från 1994 som arkiverades under 2021.
Vid 20-årsjubileumet av urvalet till National Recording Registry står det nu klart att New Jersey-rapparen Queen Latifahs debutalbum, “All Hail The Queen från 1989, kommer sparas för framtida generationer. I motiveringen står att läsa:
“Her album showed rap could cross genres including reggae, hip-hop, house and jazz — while also opening opportunities for other female rappers.”
Andra verk som valdes in inkluderar Madonna-låten “Like A Virgin,” Mariah Careys “All I Want for Christmas Is You” och Daddy Yankees hitlåt “Gasolina” från 2004.
Den ansvariga bibliotekarien på kongressens bibliotek, Carla Hayden, säger i ett uttalande:
“The National Recording Registry preserves our history through recorded sound and reflects our nation’s diverse culture. The national library is proud to help ensure these recordings are preserved for generations to come, and we welcome the public’s input on what songs, speeches, podcasts or recorded sounds we should preserve next. We received more than 1,100 public nominations this year for recordings to add to the registry.”
