Den Atlanta-fostrade rapparen Latto har under 2023 firat stora framgångar med egna singlar och ett flertal stora samarbeten, med Cardi B och Jung Kook i BTS. Under sommaren presenterades hon även medverka i läskedrycksvarumärket Sprites stora kampanj för att fira hiphopkulturens 50-årsjubileum med bland annat Nas, GloRilla och Rakim med på tåget.

Bara någon vecka efter det officiella firandet i New York bjuder nu Latto och Sprite på en tolkning av Eric B. & Rakims klassikerlåt “Don’t Sweat The Technique” från 1992. Hennes nya tolkning är kort och gott betitlad “Technique”.

Inför releasen berättar Latto för Complex att låten kom till efter flera samtal med Rakim:

“We talked a lot, and he was just saying, “You just gotta be you. Don’t let no one steer you away from being you.” That’s really the main thing. He also was like, he came up in the era where they were the innovators of a whole new genre.”

Hon berättar vidare:

“You can’t outdo a song like that. So the pressure was definitely on, but I felt like the best approach was to tell my story. You can’t go wrong with telling your own story.”

Latto kommenterar även att glappet mellan olika hiphop-generationer upplevs ha ökat över tid:

“Naturally, it’s gonna be some type of divide because the world and music is so different. We have social media and streaming and all these different things that they didn’t have. Our experiences are gonna naturally be different with hip-hop. But I think for the most part, like with this campaign, we bridge the gap and all come together when we can.”
