Gift Of Gab släpper postumt soloalbum – lyssna på första singeln “Vice Grip”

I juni i år kom det tragiska beskedet att Blackalicious-rapparen Gift Of Gab lämnat jordelivet. Men förutom ett välrespekterat arv, både som ena halvan av Blackalicious och som solorappare, lämnade han en mängd osläppt musik. Däribland “Finding Inspiration Somehow”, ett album som var tänkt att släppas under sommaren men som som sköts upp i samband med hans bortgång. Nu bekräftas det att skivan släpps den 10 september och idag får vi höra den första postuma singeln från rapparen.

“My brother, the Gift of Gab, is in peak form on ‘Vice Grip’. His flow is mathematically fierce, his tone gruff and aggressive. The song is relentless and compelling from start to finish. In short: he’s rapping his face off”, säger vännen och kollegan Lateef the Truthspeaker, en del av SoleSides Records, i ett pressutskick.

Även producenten Nick Andre, som ligger bakom både låten och albumet i stort, uttalar sig som “Vice Grip” och Gift Of Gab:

“‘Vice Grip’ isn’t the type of beat that I would normally send Gab, but I’m glad I did because he absolutely destroyed it in my opinion. I remember him hitting me back on the phone shortly after I shared the beat with him saying that he was about halfway done writing to it and asked if he could come over the following day after dialysis to record it. I’ve never met anyone that had that same kind of drive and passion for what he did as Gab did.”

Gift Of Gab hade kämpat med njursjukdom i sju år innan han genomgick en transplantation i januari 2020. Han fortsatte att försöka hålla sig frisk under pandemin samtidigt som han alltid jobbade på ny musik.

“Our brother was an MCs’ MC who dedicated his life to his craft. One of the greatest to ever do it. He’s the most prolific person I’ve ever known. He was all about pushing the boundaries of his art form in the most authentic way possible. He truly believed in the healing power of music. He viewed himself as a vessel used by a higher power whose purpose was to give positive contributions to humanity through Rhyme”, säger Blackalicious-kollegan och barndomsvännen Chief Xcel.
