Den minst sagt mångsidiga gruppen BROOKZILL! fördes samman av en rad av helt slumpmässiga händelser. Legendaren DJ Prince Paul reste till Brasilien, där han blev introducerad till MC Rodrigo Brandão. Paul och Brandão’s bekantskap utvecklades till en stark vänskap, som senare sipprade över till musikproduktion. Senare bjöd de två in Digable Planets’ MC Ladybug Mecca för ett gästinhopp, som snabbt övergick till en permanent plats i gruppen. Tillskottet av producenten Don Newkirk cementerade gruppen, och BROOKZILL! föddes. På gruppens debutalbum “Throwback to the Future” skapar gänget en tropisk atmosfär som bakgrund för Ladybug Mecca & Brandão’s vassa bars på portugisiska.

I en intervju via Bandcamp säger Ladybug Mecca om samarbetet där hon använder portugisiska:

“I haven’t done a full verse. I used to throw in a little Portuguese here and there. I don’t know if anyone even noticed. Portuguese is my first language, so a lot of times I think in Portuguese and I write American rhymes using those cadences. I’ve always wanted to rhyme in Portuguese, so getting with Rodrigo and just making that happen, was a dream come true. It was very natural, and I want to do it more.”
