Starter was founded in 1971 as a supplier of team uniforms for high school sports programs. By the mid-1970’s, the company was manufacturing sports-licensed apparel and headwear under agreements with the major professional sports leagues. The original Starter satin jacket was first worn on field by Major League Baseball teams in 1979 and the company created the “Locker Room Tee” for the 1986 NBA Champions. Eventually, the brand would form apparel partnership with the NCAA, CFL and Olympics in addition to the four major professional leagues.
The 1980’s and 90’s saw explosive growth for Starter as the brand became highly sought-after around the world. The Starter Satin Jacket, Breakaway Jacket and Adjustable Snapback Hat became iconic styles that crossed over both the sports and fashion world. Starter would grow to become a favorite brand of athletes, celebrities and pop culture personalities of the generation, including the famous television commercial with DJ Jazzy Jeff.
