Häromdagen fick A$AP Rocky motta det nyinstiftade priset Virgil Abloh Award av Harlem’s Fashion Row. Rocky mottog priset på Apollo, där han höll ett improviserat tacktal och berättade för publiken om hur Abloh var den som upptäckte kollektivet A$AP Mob.
“For y’all who don’t know, Virgil discovered us, ASAP, as a bunch of kids before I got my record deal or any of that. We was downtown in SoHo just cooling and we wasn’t old enough to get into this club. Virgil peeped us and unbeknownst to us—and we ain’t know that he knew who he was—he’s like, ‘Wait, y’all are those Harlem kids, the trendy ones’. And we was tripping like, ‘Wait. Virgil knows who we are, the fashion world knows about us?'”
Han återberättade också hur han ett år senare anlitade Abloh för sitt debutalbum “Long. Live. ASAP” och dess turné.
“It’s crazy because to be a trendsetter it takes a lot of balls, excuse my French. You really gotta be brave”, tillade han senare.
Virgil Abloh Award instiftades till förra årets Fashion Show & Style Awards, där Issa Rae blev den första att hedras med priset. I ett pressmeddelande då beskrevs priset vilja lyfta “like-minded individuals who embody Virgil’s spirit, brilliance, and vision, through invaluable contributions to culture, community, and innovation.”
Abloh omkom som bekant 2021, efter en privat kamp mot cancer.
