Redan 2015 började tisslas om en reboot av den klassiska tv-serien “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”. Men det skulle dröja till i somras innan vi fick bekräftat att nyversionen, kort och gott betitlad “Bel-Air”, skulle komma att sändas via NBC och deras nya streamingtjänst Peacock. Redan då stod det klart att nyversionen av serien beställts i två säsonger, där Jabari Banks kommer att spela en ung Will Smith. Nu bekräftas att premiären sänds via Peacock i samband med Super Bowl Sunday den 13 februari 2022.

Smith är såklart involverad i projektet som exekutiv producent, då serien skapats tillsammans med hans produktionsbolag Westbrook Inc. Idag får vi det första teaser-klippet för serien där Will Smith även kan höras som berättarröst i bakgrunden.

Den kommande serien är baserad på Morgan Coopers uppmärksammade klipp från 2019, där originalets sitcom-format fick en mer dramatisk och mörk framtoning. Det är också så det verkar bli, men mycket är också detsamma. Utöver Will Smith återvänder originalets skapare Andy och Susan Borowitz samt producenterna Quincy Jones och Benny Medina.

“At its heart, Bel-Air is a coming-of-age story that celebrates the strength and love of the Black family. We have stayed true to the original premise of the legacy series – Will’s life is turned upside down after he is forced to leave West Philly and lands in Bel-Air with its gated mansions and wealth, however, our new series brings Will and the Banks family into the world as we know it now”, har seriens showrunners T.J. Brady och Rasheed Newsom sagt till Collider.

Morgan Cooper säger att man siktat på att “create a show that stands on its own while honoring the spirit and innovation of the original series.”

“Because Bel-Air is a drama, we’re able to really peel back the layers of these characters and themes in a way that you simply couldn’t do 30 years ago in the half-hour sitcom format. We’re able to go have tough conversations that challenge perspectives.”
