Under helgen visades den första trailern för en kommande dokumentärserie om den legendariska hiphop-gruppen Run DMC, bestående av Joseph Simmons (aka Rev Run), Darryl McDaniels (DMC) och Jason Mizell (Jam Master Jay).
I dokumentärserien gestaltas hur gruppen växte upp i New York-stadsdelen Queens och fick sitt genombrott, vilket kom att forma hiphopkulturen och förändra populärkultur för en lång tid framöver. N.W.A-legendaren Ice Cube säger bland annat i dokumentären:
“They’re the reason that hip-hop is as big as it is right now…”
Rapkollegan Ice-T berättar vidare om när singeln “It’s Tricky” blev en hitlåt under våren 1987:
“That was the moment I knew hip-hop was going to be huge — they brought more people to the genre.”
Bland övriga medverkande i dokumentären syns även LL Cool J, Chuck D, Tom Morello i Rage Against the Machine, Questlove och Jermaine Dupri. Inför premiären säger Rev. Run i ett uttalande via Billboard:
“I am very happy that the world is going to see our great story. So thankful for all that participated in helping us over the years. I started out as a young DJ Run and ended up impacting the world with my group Run-D.M.C. I am blessed to have been on this amazing journey.”
DMC säger vidare:
“This documentary series will reach, teach and educate people on the Run-D.M.C. dynamic. I know people will see themselves in our journey and I am hopefully that the next 50 years of hip-hop will be a movement of positive improvement and creativity, in the same way we changed music and the world.”
Run DMC-dokumentären “Kings From Queens” får premiär på den amerikanska Tv-kanalen Peacock den 1 februari 2024. Det är oklart om serien kommer visas på någon svensk streamingtjänst framöver.
