Mary J. Blige öppnar upp om hennes drömroll: ”I always wanted to play Nina Simone”

Mary J. Blige var nyligen på besök hos “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” för att prata om hennes nya barnbok ”Mary Can!”. Under intervjun öppnade hon även upp om hennes drömroll: Nina Simone. Mary sa att Ninas historia var den hon alltid ville höra som liten och att det vore en dröm att få spela rollen som henne i en film.

“I always wanted to play Nina Simone because I wanna learn how to play the piano and I love her songs. They’re very dark and moody and I can always find a place for that.”

Under intervjun öppnade hon även upp om 50-årsjubileumet för hip hop-kulturen och hur betydelsefull genren har blivit och fortfarande är för många människor.

“I think it’s been amazing because Hip Hop has given our culture a voice. It’s given everybody a voice and a place to speak their truth to. From JAY-Z to Nas to Biggie, they’re all speaking their truth through music, from Rakim to KRS-One to LL Cool J”.

Hon fortsatte och sa att hon hoppas att hiphopen kommer att leva vidare i 50 år till och fortsätta att inspirera och vara ett stöd för den yngre generationen.

“Everybody is speaking what they’ve lived and what they’ve done through their music and it’s given them some sort of therapy, and that’s what Hip Hop has done and I hope it continues to do that and I hope it stays around for a long time because the new generations are doing the exact same thing”.

Just nu är Mary aktuell som Monet Tejada i ”Power Book II: Ghost”, som precis blivit förnyad för en tredje säsong där även Method Man kommer att medverka. Och Marys involverande i filmbranschen fortsätter. Två av hennes stora hits, ”Real Love” och ”Strenght of a Woman”, ska dramatiseras och bli till filmer. Det är den amerikanska tv-kanalen Lifetime tillsammans med Marys egna produktionsbolag Blue Butterfly som står bakom produktionerna. Mary kommer även att vara exekutiv producent tillsammans med Ashaunna Ayars och Nicole Jackson.

I ett uttalande i samband med nyheten sa Mary:

“I wrote ‘Real Love’ based on my real-life experiences and my fans connected to it in a deeply personal way. It’s exciting to now use this song and my music to create a new story by way of film, continuing to build on a pillar of the foundation of my production company, Blue Butterfly. My passions for acting and music now include developing diverse stories with music as the backdrop.”

Filmerna släpps två lördagar i rad med start den 10 juni 2023 på Lifetime.
