Under många årtionden har kritiska röster höjts för att icke västerländska figurer, och i synnerhet mörkhyade, sällan speglas i tecknade TV-serier och barnprogram och dess hyllade hjälteroller.

Med Marvel Comics nya serie “Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors” blir det ändring på detta då “Black Spider-Man” introduceras – en tonåring vid namn Miles Morales med hälften afroamerikanskt/puertoricanskt ursprung. Serien släpps i höst i tidningsbutiker samt till surfplattor och mobiltelefoner. Seriens skapare Brian Bendis förklarar i en intervju bakgrunden till figuren:

“Many kids of color who, when they were playing superheroes with their friends, their friends wouldn’t let them be Batman or Superman, because they don’t look like those heroes but they could be Spider-Man because anyone could be under the mask.”
