Under onsdagen rapporterade The Hollywood Reporter att rapparen Azealia Banks, tillsammans med flertal rap-kollegor, kommer att delta i en kommande musikaldrama vid namn “CoCo” som regisseras av ingen mindre än Wu-Tang-mogulen RZA. Rapparen Common, som är aktuell i filmerna “Hunter Killer” och “Run All Night” rapporteras även han få en roll i filmen som kommer att produceras av Lionsgate och spelas in i New York.

Handlingen jämförs redan nu med kultklassikern 8 Mile och kommer att handla om en kvinnlig rappare (Banks) som genom sina misslyckade kurser i poesi, försöker utveckla sin förmåga för att tillslut delta i ett “Poetry slam”; en tävling inom poesi.

Sångerskan Jill Scott kommer att spela en lärarinna som inte tror att poesi och rap går ihop, medan Common kommer att inneha en roll som mentor.

Detta blir RZAs andra film bakom kameran, då han gjorde sin debut redan 2012 med actionfilmen “The Man with the Iron Fists”. Enligt Rolling Stone skrev RZA följande i ett pressmeddelande:

“I’m extremely excited and vigorously inspired to be working with Azealia Banks in my new directorial installment. Producer Paul Hall and I have assembled a cool and eclectic cast to surround Azealia. Our story, which is set in today’s contemporary youth culture, will bring a new voice to cinema that needs to be heard.

Banks will play a fiery 20-something female rapper named Coco. Set in Brooklyn, the film documents her struggles in pursuing a career in hip-hop, while also attempting to fulfill her parent’s expectations of finishing college. Having returned to school, Coco soon discovers the vivid world and ultimate power of the spoken word, where she finds her one true voice and an unlikely love in the classroom.”
